PMP exam guide: 2026 format, domains and practice questions
The Project Management Professional (PMP) exam from PMI tests how you lead and deliver projects in predictive, agile and hybrid environments. Questions are scenario-based: they describe a situation and ask for the best next action.
The content is organised into three domains: People, Process and Business Environment. Because the questions test judgement, memorising definitions is not enough; you need to understand why one option is better than the others.
Who this exam is for
The PMP suits project managers with experience leading projects who want a globally recognised credential. PMI sets eligibility rules and an application process, so check the official PMI website before you plan.
Exam format
From 9 July 2026: 180 questions (10 unscored), 240 minutes, case-study section.
Formats change. Confirm the current rules on the official PMI website before you book.
Syllabus areas
- People (33%)
- Process (41%)
- Business Environment (26%)
How to prepare
- Read the exam content outline. PMI publishes the domains, tasks and weights. Use it as your syllabus and tick off each task as you cover it.
- Study the three domains with their weights in mind. Process carries the largest share, People is next and Business Environment is the smallest. Spend your time accordingly.
- Learn to read scenario questions. Identify the role, the project approach and the stage of the project before you look at the options.
- Practise agile and hybrid scenarios. A large share of questions involve agile or hybrid delivery. Be comfortable with both vocabularies.
- Take full-length timed mocks. The exam is long. Practise holding your concentration and pacing for the full duration.
Common mistakes
- Choosing an answer that is technically correct but is not the best next action in the scenario.
- Ignoring whether the project is predictive, agile or hybrid.
- Skipping the People domain because it feels soft; it carries a third of the exam.
- Memorising terms without being able to apply them to a situation.
